solar hot water - swimming pools
Swimming Pools
Solar hot water heating is a cost effective way to heat your swimming pool, irrespective of its size. Most pools are heated using oil or gas which are expensive and highly polluting. So using solar thermal will save you money and help the environment at the same time.
It is possible to fit solar thermal to an existing pool heating system, or if you are planning a pool to use nothing but solar thermal to heat the pool.
How it works
The principals of solar thermal heating for swimming pools are the same as for domestic hot water.
An array of solar panels is installed on a south facing roof or south facing poolside area. The amount of panels required depends upon the size of the pools and the performance needed. A good rule of thumb is you need approximately an area of solar panels equal to half the surface area of the pool.
The heat transfer liquid (a water & glycol mix) inside the solar panels is heated by the sun's radiation; the panels are pressurised to 4 bar to stop the heat transfer liquid boiling so you can see how hot it does get. When the temperature in the panels is higher than the pool, a pump automatically switches on to transfer the heat via a heat exchange into the pool water just after it has been filtered and before it returns to the pool. Its that simple!
The joy is that in most cases the maximum gain is in the summer months when most people want to use their swimming pool.
