Solar Hot Water - Swimming Pool Systems
A correctly sized solar hot water system can provide all the summer heating requirements for an indoor pool in the UK climate.

Although it cannot provide all the winter heating requirements, it can contribute on days with clear skies.

The cost of heating a pool with oil, gas or electricity can be very high, and the cost is escalating as fuel prices rise. This makes solar hot water systems a very economic investment for swimming pools. So using solar thermal will save you money and help the environment at the same time. It is possible to fit solar thermal to an existing pool heating system, or to a new pool design.

How it works
The principal of solar thermal heating for swimming pools is the same as that for domestic hot water. An array of solar panels is installed on a south facing roof or on the ground. The amount of panels required depends upon the size of the pool and the performance needed. A good rule of thumb is that you need approximately an area of solar panels equal to half the surface area of the pool.

The heat transfer liquid (a water & glycol mix) inside the solar panels is heated by the sun's radiation (the panels are pressurised to 4 bar to stop the heat transfer liquid boiling, so you can see how hot the system gets!). When the temperature in the panels is higher than the pool, a pump automatically switches on to transfer the heat via a heat exchanger into the pool water just after it has been filtered and before it returns to the pool. Its that simple!

The joy is that in most cases the maximum gain is in the summer months when most people want to use their swimming pool. If you would like more information please call us on 01981 241 399 or fill in and return the swimming pool self survey form

Incentives for solar hot water projects
The Governement have announced that they intend to launch a Renewable Heat Incentive in April 2011. For an average domestic system this could be worth £250 to £350 pa
