With the introduction of the Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) scheme in April 2010, it has become viable for larger PV schemes to be installed on commercial and agricultural buildings.

Returns on investment are impressive, especially given the current low interest rates offered by the more traditional routes. The FIT pays the PV generator for all the electricity they produce from their PV system regardless of whether the electricity is then used on site or not.

If the electricity is used on site (before going through the import meter), then this electricity can be consumed without charge and offsets the import costs. Any electricity going into the grid can be sold for a further 3.1p per unit. Once signed up with a FIT supplier (purchaser), the generator will receive payments for their energy for 25 years. The payments are index linked.

FIT rates are banded – based on technology type and system size (see the table below). This is designed to evenly reward all generating systems.

Greenearth Energy Ltd has been working closely with farmers and businessmen since the FIT was launched and have installed a number of larger PV system to date. Please see the examples below.

Moor Court Farm, nr. Leominster
40kWp PV system on roof of potato store using Moser Baer modules and Fronius inverters

Temple Court Farm, nr. Ledbury
30kWp PV system on agricultural store using Moser Baer modules and Fronius inverters

Certainly Wood, Lower Lulham – nr. Hereford
100kWp PV system on roof of commercial premises using Moser Baer modules and SMA Tripower inverters

Ockeridge Farm, nr. Malvern
80 kWp PV system on potato store using Moser Baer modules and SMA Tripower inverters

Drews Farm, Gloucestershire
20 kWp PV system on agricultural storage shed, using Moser Baer modules and Fronius inverters

Pomona Farm, Bartestree
40kWp PV system on agricultural / commercial premises, using Fronius inverters

Oxhouse Farm, nr. Leominster
70kWp PV system using Moser Baer modules and Fronius inverters

Merrivale Farm, nr. Leominster
50 kWp PV system spread over three cattle sheds and using SMA Tripower inverters
